This full-day excursion to Cafayate from Salta is one of northern Argentina’s great classics. Route 68 crosses the tobacco villages (Cerrillos, La Merced, El Carril) and then the spectacular Quebrada de las Conchas, with its red rock formations carved by erosion — the Amphitheatre, the Devil’s Throat, the Toad, the Castles — and the feeling of travelling through a landscape shaped by time.
In Cafayate, the experience becomes cultural and culinary: Andean atmosphere, crafts, gastronomy and high-altitude wines, especially Torrontés, with a visit to one or two wineries near the centre and a tasting. After lunch, the return to Salta follows the same route. The 12-hour format offers a real day of discovery without organising the itinerary yourself.
